Janne Kromhout

Background

Min Design is Janne Kromhout, maker and researcher of sartorial matters. At her Amsterdam based studio she explores possible other approaches of the system of set seasons, new collections, unconscious consumption, exploitation and waste that is currently mainstream in fashion. Min Design is therefore fascinated by the influence clothing has on society and what people wish to communicate with their garments and always aims at translating this into her designs. Emotional durability of every garments is strived for by creating pieces especially made for, and with its wearer.

Teaching, keynote speeches, lectures and workshops
Janne also passionately teaches (including at the School of the Arts in Utrecht) gives lectures and keynotes on topics such as sustainable (fashion) design, history of fashion and design thinking. She also loves to share her knowledge of the craft of tailoring during workshop such as her own Fashion Evenings.

On commission
Besides autonomous work Janne designs made to measure one of a kind garments as well as performing assignments for theatre, advertising agencies, television and the film and music industry. An example is the bridal gown for the infamous marketing stunt of Dutch retail store Zeeman at the Amsterdam Fashion Week. Other clients include: the Dutch Film Festival, Theater group Urban Myth, advertising agency Habbekrats, design agency Hotel, production company Blazhoffski, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Advertising agency Comrad, design agency vandeJong, and youth theater festival Tweetakt. For her costume for Tweetakt she received an honourable mention at the Theatre Poster Awards.

Education: artist, tailor and researcher
Min Design expanded her expertise with a Master’s degree in Design Cultures at the VU University focussed on ecological sustainable fashion in 2018. Preparatory to this master she graduated in Design at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (Utrecht School of Arts) in 2000 and complemented that education immediately afterwards by specializing in the craft of tailoring and pattern drawing at the Rotterdamse Snijschool.
